Pastry vignettes, step 1

I am trying to be more regular on posting, even if I am not completely done with what I am doing, just because I think the process is going to be very important to me when I'm done.
Tomorrow, I plan to add layer #2 to these vignettes, which will be a collage overlay. This is why the sketches are simple for now, because I intend to "fill" with more layers and ideas.

I am also beginning to create ideas/words for my parameters and also methodology. I believe these should be important for all emotive architecture, but I hope to push these further with my thesis:

CONTROL
MOVEMENT
CONNECTION
BALANCE
EMOTION
EDGE
TEMPERATURE
SMELL
SOUND
LIGHT
PRIVACY
SOCIAL
RELATIONSHIP TO NATURE

  1. Your sketch looks like it has more seating options that the pastry shops you visited; is being able to stay in the same space you see/buy pastries important in the emotive experience?

  2. Yes, I envision the pastry shop having many different uses:
    1. for the park visitors - meeting friends, picking up sandwiches/pastries, sitting and catching up during non climate friendly weather
    2. for the cemetary visitors - buying flowers, buying pastries, it could either be the STARTING point for these people, or possibly the FINISH point for them. either way, it would be a space to reflect, take breaths, and either go in, or go out. i feel the only way to have an "experience" is to include seating

  3. Nellie, I am going to send you an article to read on haptic architecture. But I don't want to distract your from your collage work - which I think is really important to make your architecture come alive and as part of your methodology of working. So, promise to ignore the email until you are done with this sketch problem!

  4. We are looking forward to seeing the next steps on the pastry vignettes!

The reading is located on the FTP site -
    /Denise/Readings_UndergradThesisPrep/Pallasmaa.pdf

This deals with ideas of haptic architecture - Pallasmaa is a highly regarded Finnish architect and professor of architecture....If you like this article and find it useful, there is another great book in the same vein that maybe you could consider having Whitney of the BAC Library send you. It is called The Eyes of the Skin - Architecture and the Senses. Please let us know if you have trouble finding this if you want it.

The other reading that I think might interest you is
    /Denise/Readings_UndergradThesisPrep/Koolhas+Tschumi.pdf

Yes, this is Rem and Bernard....It's a conversation that they had together about programming. I thought that maybe it would spark some ideas for a research paper...or perhaps another section of your thesis proposal. Also, I think that the format of "question and answer" could be an interesting way for you to begin to create content for your proposal. We can talk about this more when I return.

  5. Nellie:

Looking at your images with an eye towards your next step of layering, I find the word choices smell, sound, light interesting as they are senses that have layers. All can be strong or feint - is there a major / minor relationship between these senses. likewise, can taste and touch be added to the list? All are related to memory and imagery of the brain - to be able to close your eyes and recall a touch or smell or image.
