1. a visitor will have a choice of what part of the cemetary to visit based on how they feel or how they want to feel.
2. the above ground park section will be for public use, not limited to the cemetary attendants.
3. the pastry shop will be Middle Eastern style, which will create interest from others who have no knowledge of these cultures.
I plan to visit a couple pastry shops near my house (rough, i know) in order to get some ideas on what is important for the creator/consumer in these shops. i will post my findings and floor plans tonight.
I realize that I am jumping into programming quickly, but it is more a way to study the Architectural connection with creating an emotive experience for a visitor, rather than finalizing a floorplan. The site location is not important, nor are details such as what kind of kitchen equipment are used in the back. What is more important is considering each user of this site, and finding a way to architecturally improve their experiences.
In addition to learning about emotive spaces, there are few other things that could discovered through this. Don't forget that you can use the sketch problem as a way to start to test some of the parts of the thesis proposal. I think that there are two aspects: methodology and terms of criticism that you could start to explore here. I would enocurage you to find a way to expressing the architecture ina hybrid way (part drawing/part collage) and find a way to layer this or allow overlapping. You have done a good job of explaining the purpose of the sketch problem - to explore emotive experience in architecture. Can you write up some terms of criticism with this in mind? Or, answer these questions:
ReplyDeleteHow will you know you are successful?
What defines success here?
Also, I'm curious about what happened to the other sketch problem - the daily walk, mapping/drawing/photgraphing - I was reminded of this as you said you would be visiting some pastry shops.....Maybe you can do some double duty here and map/draw/photograph as you walk?
"...a visitor will have a choice of what part of the cemetary to visit based on how they feel or how they want to feel..."
ReplyDeleteIt seems like several of us are tackling the idea of human emotion or perception in our thesis exploration. this reminded me of what andres wrote yesterday, comparing beauty and fucntion. How do you design a space that everyone will think is solemn or everyone will think is uplifting. Understanding the human spirit and providing for emotions is no easy task. I will be interested to see where this goes for you. :)
How are the emotions experienced in the Middle Eastern culture? You say pastry shops and cemeteries go hand in hand, yet people choose where they go based upon what they feel. Are cemeteries supposed to be solemn, and pastry shops a place to rejoice in the Middle Eastern culture?
ReplyDeleteIn your mapping out of activities, have you mapped out what happens as ritual after someone dies? I agree with Dave that emotion will play into your design - howe do we evoke certain emotion in design? And culturally layer on the symbolism of color and shape and sequence...
ReplyDeleteI am curious, like Teagan, about the rituals and thoughts around the Middle Eastern Culture. During the intensive, you touched on these subjects and it seemed that the pastry shop and cemetery could almost become one. Yet, in the American Culture, it seems hard to describe there similarities.
